About IFSO

The Irish Free Software Organisation (IFSO) is a non-profit organization that works to promote and protect the free software. It is formally allied to the Free Software Foundation Europe, but works autonomously. The primary motive behind setting up IFSO in January 2004 was to prevent any new legislation that could harm free software development or usage. IFSO encourages the organizations that deploy or develop free software or aid in writing of such software. Some examples of free software that IFSO has significantly promoted include OpenOffice.org office suite, GNU/Linux operating system and Firefox internet browser.

In legal terms, IFSO is a “Club” and organizes regular meetings each month. The current IFSO committee members are:

  • CiarГЎn O’Riordan, Chairman & interim press contact
  • Glenn Strong, Secretary
  • Aidan Delaney, Treasurer
  • Malcolm Tyrrell
